This guide is for anyone selling a used car in Surrey, to a private buyer or to a business. Along with what to prepare and what to ask a buyer, it sets out ICBC's own steps for the paperwork, with links to the source pages.
AKJ Auto Recycling is based at 10791 120 St (Scott Road), Surrey, and buys used vehicles of all kinds: cars, trucks, equipment, EVs and hybrids, running or not, including vehicles from outside BC. Walk-ins are welcome. The yard is open Monday to Friday 8 AM to 11 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 3 PM and Sunday 4 PM to 11 PM, and as normal on statutory holidays.
1. Get the details together
Any buyer will ask for the basics: the year, make and model, the kilometres, whether the car runs, and any damage or missing parts. Keep your service records to hand as well. For how to answer each one well, see what to send for a used car quote.
If there is still a loan on the car, say so at the start. AKJ doesn't buy a running vehicle with a loan or lien on it, but does buy accident-damaged vehicles that still have one.
2. Take a few clear photos
Photos let a buyer see the car's condition before anyone travels to look at it.
Shoot in daylight, and don't leave the damage out. Describing damage honestly lets any buyer assess the car accurately.
3. Ask for a quote
Send the details and photos through AKJ's quote form. We will confirm the next steps after reviewing them.
To see what goes into an assessment, read how AKJ handles used vehicle buying.
4. Review the offer
Before you accept any offer, from AKJ or anyone else, ask:
- What does the offer depend on: the photos, an inspection, or the car matching its description at handover?
- How and when will you be paid?
- Is there a charge for collection?
AKJ honours a price it has confirmed in writing, by text or WhatsApp, unless the car turns out to have missing parts.
5. Paperwork: ICBC's steps when you sell a used vehicle
These are ICBC's published steps for a private sale of a used vehicle in BC. Ask your Autoplan broker how they apply when you sell to a business.
The transfer form. Ownership passes on ICBC's Transfer/Tax Form (APV9T). ICBC says all four pages need original signatures from both the seller and the buyer. You then take the form, with your signed registration, to an Autoplan broker; ICBC suggests going together.
Registration. The buyer must register the vehicle at an Autoplan broker within 10 days of buying it.
Plates. Take your plates off the car. They remain ICBC's property. You can put them on a replacement vehicle for up to 10 days, but only if ICBC's conditions are met; otherwise they go back to ICBC or a broker.
Insurance. Remember to cancel your insurance or transfer it to another vehicle. Any refund depends on the time left on the policy, any money owed and non-refundable fees, and a cancellation fee may apply.
Open claims. ICBC warns that an active claim may become void when ownership changes. If you have an open claim, check with ICBC before you sell.
Confirm the details with your Autoplan broker before you sell.
Selling to AKJ: bring your registration and photo ID so AKJ can confirm you own the car. AKJ removes the plates and gives them to you, so you can cancel your insurance, and gives you a bill of sale.
If your car is going for scrap rather than resale, these steps may not all apply. Ask your Autoplan broker what you need to do about your registration, insurance and plates.
6. Hand the car over
AKJ collects the car at no charge, with same-day pickup for requests received before 5 PM, subject to location and availability. Before the car goes, take out your belongings.
